Victoria Country Club Bulletin December 2016

Post Date:Dec 6, 2016

Car Park Upgrade

Those members who have been to the club in the last few days would have noted that the resurfacing of the car park has been completed. The new tarmac needs to cure a bit longer before we can paint lines, which will be a welcome relief to most of us. We are hopeful that we will be done before the end of the year and order will once again be restored.

World Amateur Golf Tournament

As reported on several times previously, VCC was one of the four golf courses selected to host the World Amateur Golf Tournament.  Players from all over the world got to experience our fantastic course, as well as our KZN hospitality. The feedback from the organizers and players was fantastic, with a number of the players stating that VCC was their favourite of the four courses. The team from Singapore were the winners for 2016.  This event was a great opportunity for VCC to showcase our course and facilities to the world and by all accounts we were successful.  The added bonus was that it was also a very beneficial financially. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who were so understanding during this time.

Rising stars

Two young VCC golfers have been attracting attention recently for their outstanding performances.
Nikhil Gopal began this year by winning three KwaZulu-Natal junior events in a row. He then went on to win the KZN Schools Championship by nine shots, before coming second at the Durban Country Club junior club champs. Nikhil won the Junior Africa Challenge by one shot and made the SA Schools golf team by coming fourth at the SA High Schools Interprovincial tournament. He also won the Maritzburg Closed and came fourth at the Maritzburg Open.
Nikhil won golfer of the year at St. Charles and came ninth at the European Championship in Scotland this year, enabling him to play in the international team against a European side in the Van Horn Cup, where his team came out on top.
Another potential prodigy is Cameron Mac Clary, who played his first junior tournament at Kloof Country Club on October 16 this year. At just six years old, Cameron shot a 48.
This young golfer has been attending lessons with VCC’s Garath Arnold since he was four years old and shows tremendous promise.
Keep an eye on these rising stars, who represent the next generation of golfers.

Tennis News

Racquet technology ratchets up a notch

The first tennis racquet on the market with integrated sensors, the Babolat Play/Pulse, now allows players to get an overview of their tennis game and analyse all aspects of their play.

By measuring data in three dimensions - power, technique and endurance – the high-tech racquet can deliver statistics on where a player is hitting the ball on the face of the racquet, the RPMs (revolutions per minute) energy, and even serve speed.

Performances can be shared with friends, and compared against results of other Babolat community members, or even against professional players.

The technology built into the racquet, which also includes two buttons and a USB port inside the butt cap, is said to not change the performance, playability or feel of the racquet.

See babolatplay.com for more.

Coaching Tip

Are you are having trouble hitting a “crisp” volley? The secret of hitting a crisp volley is not to over hit the shot. A short “jab” just before you make contact with the ball is what is required to make that crisp contact. Also, be sure to have momentum moving forward into the ball before contact, while keeping good balance throughout the contact.
